Shall I take this offer? Hi experts there, I got an offer from a company providing trustee, fund admin and custodian services. The job scope is mainly verification of data from Reuter and Bloomberg System using VBA. Yet development comes as 2nd priority, maintenance seems to play a bigger role. So this position opens to both Business and IT graduates. I am an IT fresh graduate, with the ambition to get into core business of banking industry in the long run. Taking this job, I get to learn about Reuter and Bloomberg as well as basic knowledge for securities, derivatives and fixed income. Yet I am wondering how such working experience benefits me if I hope to be involved in core business in the long run. Second, what is difference between the kind of exposure I can get from such company compared to working in IT department in a bank or an out-sourced company? Urgently looking forward to your advice. Cheers. Thank you very much.
this one is a typical middle office job.
you will download data into spreadsheet and run those macros to generate some reports or some data required by trading desk for their decision making.

Everyday you will be doing the same thing.

If you wanna jump from this position to front Office, of coz possible. Anything is possible because all kinds jobs I ever see some cases that ppl directly go into trading biz . like Computing, Engineering, even arts and social science.

It all depends on your own personal quality and LUCK, sorry , have to say this. I know millions of ppl is dreaming the same dream, so you must make yourself different to let the employer hire you and you need to be good at networking. know more traders. know them well. let them know you well also. so that when they know the positions, they can think of you.

anyway, this is just a good offer, if the salary not bad, go for it. the subsequent jump all depends on what you are doing in your job and out of your job.

good luck!

狂感谢!仔细看了三遍。谢谢你。 As to my knowledge about this job, seems that the team we are supporting is not trading team yet a bunch of accountants. Seems that they will be interacting with various banks for various insurance and funding plans. (具体的我不太懂,可能表达的不准确) In that case, does it make any difference compared to supporting a trading team? (As in the kind of exposure I can get.) I have the feeling that this job will be routine work. Have to say that the pay is not very good, comparing to an Engineer or IT job. But I will probably have more time to learn. Any particular certification that you recommend? Since I will be supporting accountants, maybe I will do an ACCA? For trading, I am not that ambitious as I am the one who values a happy life more than the $$ I make. (sigh,好像有点没志气)But still curious, what kind of characteristics and personality do you usually see in a trader?
hehe, this kind of discussion will then last till no end.
well, my personal point of view.

Traders might be outspoken or intraverted, they may be silent in a party while the other type of them might be very shining.

But a good one will always have the following I THINK:

1. great confidence of self-judgement. Believe themselves can see something more clearly than most of the ppl in the market. and During cases when market moving not in their favor, they can still stay on, of coz, before their stop loss line was touched.

2. extreme discipline. If they have 1 but do not have point 2. they will probably end up with losing all the wealth. because they might just do not believe they are wrong in some big positions and refuse to cut loss despite of well-set stop loss line, then all finish.

3. Intelligent. Of coz, this is required by most of the careers. including science and engineering and IT etc

4. have clear goals.

5. can handle tough situations in life well. This is a general characteristic of ppl having high EQ :)

just think of these points. welcome all experts here to add on. :) nice after-lunch discussion anyway.

Talk is cheap. the above points look easy, but when you are in the situation, you might just lose yourself.

Just imagine, will you having lunch and rest well and work as normal if you have a losing position of a few million dollars and probably boss is shouting at you? :)

Not only trader, most of the careers require these if you want to be excellent in them. Trader also got losers. hehe...

Good luck~

Waho, with all the good characteristics you mentioned it seems thata former successful trader can actually be very succesful if he swith to other industry as well. Regarding my last two questions, can you roughly explain what do accountants do in such a role? Since I would be supporting accountants if I take the job. Thank you.
from what you asked,
i can sensed that you wanted this one?

actually... i do not think it will benefit too much for your future plan. since ur "front desk" are not managing portfolios or trading, I suppose it is not too much benefit direclty to you.

plus you said the pay is not that good.

Then i think the position was set for Diploma holders only, like poly graduates without any Univ. degrees.

i might guess it is 2000 to 2500?

then suggest do not take it

Thank you. 多谢关注。I suppose they are doing product control. Yet I will not be directly involved in product pricing etc. Maybe I did not make it clear: I am looking for something, but trading is not really my choice. What I know about trader is that it is a high pressure yet high return job. I am not ready for that. Initially, I was surprised to learn that accountant also plays a part in such a product control precess (汗一个,我到底是菜鸟). You explained it quite well. Product control is the word. 华新真是卧虎藏龙啊 忍不住想问一句: For a fresh graduate w/o any experience, what are the possible ways of getting into this industry, besides taking up an IT job? The various career talk held by various banks or instituitions are not useful (or i should say maybe it is because I am not good enough? =) ). And for IT positions advertised, experiences are usually required. 所以我迷惘。。。
get yourself a "Thing" that HR manageer will be interested in
out of 100 candidates, if you passed CFA level 3 already , then the chances of you being picked up for interview is very high.

Just take CFA as an example. MFE, FRM etc all can add credit on you.

Improve yourself first, then you will be in better position. :)

good luck
