It depends. If Ruizhan is planning train with non mainstream opening to improve his understanding of opening theories, then it is good in the long term as he would be able to play better against opponents who play horse or elephant openings. But if he plans to play 单提马 in the competition two months later, then it would be a risk to take. We all know that 单提马 is a defensive opening and it does not suit ruizhan's attacking style. Moreover, two months is too short to convert an attacking style to defensive style.
Agreed.
Therefore I would expect him to return to his original opening after 2 months, while he'd try to absorb much as he can on the non-central cannon openings, which, will later be a good complimentary to his central cannon, and will eventually help him understand central cannon better. I don't expect him to catch up the Singapore masters on the elephant type openings in a short time, but if he manages to improve by 1 move, that's quite enough for October competition.
艺术是对美好的追寻与反思。
