Q Why is the Special, MediSave and Retirement Account (SMRA) interest rate re-pegged at 1%-point above the 10 Year Singapore Government Security (10YSGS) yield?
A
Ideally, the Special, MediSave and Retirement Account (SMRA) rate should reflect the yield on a 30-year Special Government Securities (SGS). However, there is currently no such instrument. Hence, the SMRA interest rate is re-pegged at 1%-point above the 10-year SGS yield, because this would adequately provide for the higher rate that would be expected on a longer term bond.
However, in view of the low interest rate environment and the continuing uncertainty in the global economy, the Government has decided to maintain the 4% floor rate for interest earned on all SMRA monies for another year until 31 December 2021.
